KIDS' FANS Community Partners

By partnering with the City of Stamford and local community organizations, the KIDS' FANS program is getting out the 5-2-1-0 message to the parents and children who need it most.

Some of our partners are:

Childcare Learning Center

KIDS' FANS worked closely with the staff at CLC to change their menus to include healthy choices for breakfast and lunch. CLC offer many avenues for physical activity for children and also includes parents in some of these activities.

CTE

In the Fall of 2010 this 12 week program was introduced in the after school program at CTE. Children receive nutrition education for 12 weekly sessions and continue physical activity year round.
The Domus Foundation

In February 2008, the KIDS' FANS Nutrition program was introduced at the Trailblazers Middle School. At the end of school year all children "grew into their weight" with steady or lower Body Mass Index (BMI). They significantly increased their fitness levels and improved academic grades. Trailblazer's Academy has a community garden to teach children more about fruits and vegetables.

Downtown Special Services District/Restaurants

In the Summer of 2008 a pilot project introducing healthy menus for children was launched 19 Restaurants joined this effort for 2 weeks. In Winter restaurant week of 2011 20 Restaurants joined this effort.  Some of these restaurants continue offering healthy options for children.

JCC

In Spring of 2011 the Jewish Community Center offered this12 week program in the after school program, Children receive group nutrition education in 12 sessions and continue physical activity year round.

Stamford Public Schools

KIDS' FANS and the Stamford Board of Education have partnered to:

  • Bring fitness classes into schools
  • Hold a  health fair for public school teachers
  • Conduct a physical education teachers workshop
  • Create an early childhood blueprint
  • Inform educators via the Community Linkage Report presented to the Board of Education by Dr. Mathur.

Stamford Youth Foundation

KIDS' FANS and the Stamford Youth Foundation have created the Fun Fit Club designed for students in grades 1-5, offered on Saturday mornings.  Classes include fun fitness (by Ronne Garber and Bodywise by Betty) and professional 'kid-friendly' nutritional education (by Stamford Hospital Nutritionists). These sessions are held on Saturday mornings Scholarship are available for children with free and reduced lunch.

The Stamford Health Foundation

Working KIDS' FANS the Foundation opened fitness centers at both city high schools.  These centers are designed to serve students not playing on organzied athletic teams.

ALTA Family Resource Center

KIDS' FANS is partnering with ALTA to bring the 5-2-1-0 message to Spanish speaking families in the community.

Stamford Pediatric Medical Community

KIDS' FANS purchased and distributed American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Obesity Clinical Decision Support Charts for all area pediatricians.

School Readiness Council

Childhood obesity is one of their top priorities. Events are held with special emphasis on providing access to nutrition education and physical activity.

United Way

United Way has partnered with the Obesity task force to address the issue of childhood obesity. This partnership was announced at a Media launch in April 2010 and was attended by New York Jets star Jerricho Cotcherry as well as many obesity task force members. A short video was prepared. (View)

YMCA

In Fall 2010 the KIDS'FANS program was introduced in the LEAD Academy of the YMCA. Children receive 12 weeks of group nutrition education and physical activity. Transportation to bring children from school is available.
